Wake Up Girls Zoo Episode 5

Merchandise it!

What They Say:
Thank you for your phone call. This is Zoonet Shimada. You’re calling to place an order? Thank you! You’d like the product that appeared on the previous broadcast? Very well. Please give me a moment to confirm your order. Excuse me. (Hold Music) Thank you for waiting. Would you like to purchase the “Polar Bear with a Shark in its Mouth figurine” introduced on Zoonet TV for 7,980 yen? Okay, thank you.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With the girls participating in an ice skating competition in order to promote the zoo, things don’t go well in the end for tem since there was controversy. What makes it fun is just the costume and look of it all before it shifts back to the zoo side itself, where we see Mayu doing her best to learn how to make the perfect poses for when figures are made of her. The idea of selling zoo idol merchandise is a smart one, but that make for some cute bits about who would actually be popular and the best approach to making a good figure/pose, whether to be cute or scary. Mayu has some real fun while dealing with a few of the others as she comes up with a whole bear eating shark pose that would likely do well but just looks creepy here. Having it sell out is priceless.

In Summary:
While there is cuteness abound in the way that Mayu is looking to merchandise the heck out of the girls by selling souvenirs under the guise of figures, you also have to look at this series as basically the same kind of grab. While I, from the vantage point of just watching the show, can enjoy it for just that, I can’t imagine the content owners themselves not trying to merchandise the heck out of the cuteness of this show in a lot of different ways. There’s some good stuff going on here in how Mayu works the entire chain of events and it left me smiling as she put it all into place, and as others realized just what had happened.
